This International Herald Tribune article talks about the use of innovative technologies for reaching the poor with banking services, even in remote rural areas. Jamii Bora, an Acumen Fund investee, is highlighted as a leading microfinance institution in this field. We are proud to be working with them.
It would be interesting to know about Jamii Bora’s experience in its entirety, i.e. what are the challenges (infrastructure, training or anyother) faced by them in implementing it, and to what extent, in number terms, were they able to reduce cost by using the technology. Very often these real issues are not spoken of, and to that extent knowledge sharing is rather limited.
In anycase, the fact that there has been a real breakthrough in using technology for microfinance, is a big win for the sector. Heartiest congratulations to all who made it happen!
