2007 has not been kind to Bangladesh, one of the most vulnerable regions in South Asia in terms of natural disasters. In July, heavy monsoon rains caused devastating floods, affecting around 10 million people in 34 districts. A second wave of flooding lingered until October, destroying homes and livelihoods. Now the fiercest cyclone in 130 years has hit the southwestern coast, killing some 3,500 people, destroying homes and forcing millions to flee.Â
BRAC, a multifaceted organization that works to improve the quality of life of the poor of Bangladesh, has been working to provide emergency assistance. You can read more about their relief efforts on the BRAC blog.

It is so unfortunate that year 2007 cannot be mentioned without agitation. It has brought to the world socio-economic and political truama leaving us so painfully in mourning. More than 3000 vulnerable individuals have painfully passed away in Bangladesh-so naturally caused that man could do nothing to prevent. Several thousands have been displaced in my homeland Ghana, and many more dying from several diseases including recent floods. We cannot prevent these disasters, but at least we can prevent the deaths-by simply investing in low-cost housing, clean water and effective human capital management. These will go a long way in solving our miseries and uplifting human standards beyond the presnt day poverty jinx.
